Name spelling

  • In the initial phase of the project, transcription of source materials was done faithfully, without normalizing or standardizing spelling. Consequently, appellations, first names, and surnames appear under a huge variety of phonetic variations.
  • To maximize identification chances, users are encouraged to include as many such phonetic variations as possible in their searches.

How the Search Works

  • The platform uses an advanced search engine with "Approximate Matching". This feature automatically identifies names even when minor spelling variations or typing errors are present (typo tolerance).
  • For more effective searching, you can use the root of a name (for example, "Pop" for "Popescu", "Popa", etc.). The search engine will automatically return all results that start with the entered letters (prefix matching).

Field Completion

  • Filling both fields prioritizes results containing both names. If the first name doesn't match, the search engine will still show results for the last name.

Query Examples:

"Pop" Exact match: returns only records that contain exactly the entered words (between quotation marks).
Popov Prefix match: returns all records that start with the entered fragment.
Vranceanu Approximate match: returns records containing names similar to the entered terms (e.g. Vrâncean, Vrânceanul, Vrîncean, etc.).
Ion Pop Combined search: returns records that contain both the entered last name and first name.
